What Causes Frizz and How to Prevent It

Unmanageable and frizzy hair can be both time consuming and frustrating. For those who struggle with hard to manage hair, there are several ways to resolve your hair dilemma.

Frizz is the most common hair complaint hair dressers receive. Your hair is made up of three layers: the cortex layer, the cuticle layer and the medulla layer. The reason your hair becomes frizzy is because the cuticle layer becomes raised, allowing humidity to pass through the hair shaft and expand the overall cuticle. As a result, your hair appears dry and damaged instead of smooth and brilliant.Curly hair tends to be more frizzy than straight hair because it also tends to be drier than straight hair, which makes it more vulnerable to humidity. Damaged hair is also more prone to frizz because the damaged cuticle layer is weak allowing humidity to pass through the hair shaft creating frizz. Dr Anita Gawande, says “The key to smooth hair is depositing moisture and rebuilding the hair’s natural protein bonds, to create smooth hair that is more resistant to frizz and dullness.”

Hair can become dehydrated for many reasons:

  1. Your shower routine; For more manageable hair, avoid very hot and long showers. The hotter the water is, and the longer you expose your hair to the heat, the more your hair is stripped of natural oils that keep frizz at bay.
  2. Shampooing too much; Minimize your shampoos to once or twice a week to reduce frizz. Shampooing hair too often strips your hair of its natural oils, which makes it dry and frizzy. Your shampoo’s formula is also important. According to research, shampoos that contain sulfates and parabens can increase frizz and cause breakage. Choose a sulfate and paraben free shampoo to prevent frizz like a Keratin shampoo. When used consistently, Keratin Shampoos rebuild the natural proteins in your hair, making it stronger and healthier. Click to find a quick resource to choosing the right shampoo for your hair type.
  3. How to brush your hair; Every hair expert will agree that it is important to avoid brushing your hair with fine toothed combs or brushes that pull and break your hair. Comb dry hair with wet fingers or using a wide toothed comb.
  4. Skip the towel; When drying your hair, try using a t-shirt or microfiber cloth instead of a towel. Regular towels create more friction, which may cause frizz. T-shirts and microfiber cloths are gentler and will help your hair lie flat as it dries.
  5. Blow or iron your hair with care; Excessive exposure to heat can damage your dry, frizzy hair. When you use a blowdryer or an iron, take a few additional measures to protect your hair like using heat protecting styling products and limiting the time of heat exposure.
  6. Your hair’s lack of moisture; “Dry or frizzy hair lacks moisture,” Keratin helps seal the hair cuticle and guards your hair from humidity and frizz. Natural Keratin Smoothing Treatments will protect your hair, decrease frizz and enhance manageability.

  1. Great article, I live in South Florida and humidity is a part of life here. After reading about it on this article. I finally decided to try the Natural Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy, I can wait to see the results. Very excited!

  2. Does anyone has any experience with it? What’s the difference between Express Blowout and Natural keratin Smoothing Treatment? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  3. Hi Dianna, I have used both. Express blowout is a lighter treatment that is faster to use and does not last as long as a full keratin treatment. Express Blowout is designed to be used as a short term straightener and the application is much simpler than a regular keratin Treatment.

  4. Wow, this is a great resource for me. I was researching Keratin Treatments and had to go from one article to another in trying to piece together all the information in order to get a full answer. I have super frizzy hair and had heard about Keratin treatments. I decided to look into it and stumbled onto this blog.

  5. I haven’t really been lucky enough to find a shampoo or conditioner that I love. I just thinking it would great if we all shared our favorite Shampoos and Conditioners so other people like me can get some ideas of what are good hair products out there. Thanks so much to whoever replies 🙂

  6. I live in Brasil and we have many Keratin products here. Many are made here and are very good. I have tried Keratin Complex 2 months ago and the result was very good. I was very impressed with how effective it was. Many keratin products here have formaldehyde which is not good for your health. The products made here are very effective because they have that ingredient. From what I can tell Keratin Complex’s Smoothing product does not have it.

  7. My husband goes crazy when my hair frizzes up. He just does not like how frizzy and curly hair looks on me. I live in New Orleans and during the hot muggy summers it is impossible to maintain straight smooth hair without using a keratin based treatment. I had tried flat irons with different types of conditioning oils and that worked for about 1 hour. I tried using other straightening products like liquid keratin and they worked but only for a few days. For women like me that live in the deep south and know that summers can be brutal to one’s hair, finding the right product for a longer term solution is key. This article helped me understand why frizz is so difficult to control and how to control it.

    1. I have had the SAME experience. Living in Miami its so hard to control frizz. That is why Keratin has been a life saver! It doesn’t make my hair super straight, but it does help with the frizz.
